Can you answer this question about my commercial auto insurance app?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

On the commercial auto application it asks if this is a service, commercial or retail vehicle. I know it’s not retail. But what’s the difference between a commercial vehicle and a service vehicle?

Service is a vehicle that you use to get to and from a job site. The vehicle itself, isn’t used in the business. Typicially it would be like a salesperson’s car.

Commercial is a vehicle that’s actually used to perform the job – like when you’re a courier bringing stuff somewhere, or if you have a truck that delivers stuff, or hauls materials (like gravel, or concrete) to a job site, or you’re hauling people (limo, taxi, bus, ambulance).

Retail, is when you’re delivering to a residence – a non-business. Like flowers, or furniture delivery.

How do you become an insurance claims representative in NYC?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Is there something specific that you have to study? or a license you need to get?

Most insurance companies require a 4 year college degree.

20+ years ago – you could be an adjuster with just a high school diploma. But today…..very few companies will even talk to you if you don’t have a 4 year degree.

The only exception to this — is companies will often hire body shop managers w/o a degree to work as vehicle damage appraisers. In this case, their experience as a body shop manager or owner will be enough.

Or if you do not have a college degree but have years of experience working as an adjuster – companies will consider you.

But with no experience– a 4 year degree is a must.

Now….it does not matter what the degree is in. I have worked with theater majors, dance majors, business, math, history…etc. If you are going to be working in injury claims – a biology, sports physiology, etc can be very helpful.

It’s easiest to get on with one of the big national carriers. Just start pounding the pavement and applying. If you know anyone in the field….give them a call. The big companies tend to have the most turn over….and therefore, are the easiest to get on with.

However, not all insurance companies are the same. So, if you get on with one of these big carriers and they are awful to work for (and some of them definitely are).. then stick it out for 2 years — get your experience and then try to get on with a better company.

Once a company hires you…they will train you and they will get you signed up for the licensing exam and any study you need. You don’t have to have the license in advance.

Being an adjuster is a hard job. Not everyone is cut out for it. I think all us adjuster are probably just a little bit off.

You work your fanny off..long hours- what ever it takes to get the job done….for little to no thanks…..catch a whole lot of grief and are generally stressed. If someone is talking to you…it’s because something rotten happened to them. – their car is wrecked, house is damage, spouse is hurt. They are going to take it out on someone and you’re it. But every now and then…something happens and you know why you do it.

Adjuster’s don’t do the job for pats on the back. It’s good pay…but you’ll never be rich. So, we don’t do it for the money.

We do it because we want help. We want to serve. We want to be there when things are at their worst. Like I said, it’s not for everyone.

You need to be organized, have good customer service skills, be able to think on your feet, think outside the box and solve problems. You will never be bored. You will always be challenged.

All in all….I love it and wouldn’t do anything else.

Good Luck

How can one get a health insurance company to pay for a back inversion table?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

The insurance company says that a back inversion table is experimental, therefore, not covered. How can one get a device paid by the insurance company that would benefit the insured? The inversion table would expand the spine, allowing blood and other fluid to flow more freely.

The table sounds good, but the problem is that :

1 – insurance companies pay for as little as possible
2 – there is little evidence to show a benefit to the table.

Does life insurance have to be used to pay the deceased debts?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

If I am the beneficiary of life insurance payment after someone dies, do I have to by law use that money to pay off the deceased debts? Or is this something that the bill collectors cannot touch at least legally? How would the creditors even know that there was a payout of life insurance? Anyway for them to know this? Can I get in trouble for not paying?

There are certain loans and debts that cancelled upon someone’s death…like most federal student loans.

However, mortgages, auto-loans, and credit cards are often covered by either the deceased’s estate or the insurance policy prior to being dispursed to the beneficiary.

I suggest getting a lawyer to aid in the paperwork and obligations that go along with being a beneficiary.

Can the car insurance find out that I have been in a car accident?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

I have just gotten a new job and I said I havent been in a car accident, but I did twice. Are they gonna find out about it when they add me in their car insurance?

If they run a Clue and DMV report you bet they will find it, if it was reported to either.

If your willing to take the chance that it was not reported and your willing to risk that your new jobs HR person along that companies insurance carrier wont send it through undewriting to verify information you have givin then your really diluding yourself. You need to be honest about this. The companies insurance carriers will not set the rate the company has to pay for you to drive a company vechical by the information you gave them. They will set the rate by what they discover in underwriting. Hopefully this new company will find your honesty with them refreshing and you wont start off on a bad note with them.

Good Luck and be Honest!

Will most insurance companies cover the replacement of your roof if it is deemed a danger?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Will most insurance companies cover the replacement of your roof if it is deemed a danger?

Maintenance of the property is the obligation of the owner not the insurance company.

If a furnace is getting old do you think insurance should pay to replace it because it could be dangerous? And while we are at it how about that old wiring that needs to be replaced, it’s getting downright dangerous – call the insurance company. And so long as their out here how about checking with the insurance company about fixing the crooked slab on the walkway, it’s dangerous, someone might trip and hurt themselves. Oh and the plumbing is getting old it might ……….

Sorry insurance doesn’t work like that. If it did you could not afford the premiums that would have to be charged.

Is my insurance broker doing his job?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

After some damage in my rented apartment, I called my broker (first time in 14 years) to make a claim. After a lot of talking, he says the insurer cannot help me. I contacted the insurer directly and they say they will do it. Why am I paying a broker who keeps me from getting my claims settled? Next time, I will go directly to an insurance company.

I have actually seen this happen first hand.

I’ll tell you why, and then you fire your broker. You can fire the broker, and keep the same company, by just calling the company and asking them for a few names of alternative agents in your area, then just transferring your insurance to a different agent with a broker of record letter. The new agent would be happy to help you with that paperwork.

See, that broker gets paid commission for your policy. But he ALSO gets paid "contingencies" based on his claims. If, as a whole, for that company, the insurance company pays out less than 50% of what they took in, they’re going to write him a big fat check for up to 10% of all the premiums he’s written with them. So, I’ve actually seen, real, live, agents discouraging the filing of claims. And not in the best interest of the client (because I’ll do that, you don’t want to claim every paperclip you lose, the surcharges will KILL you), but in the interest of their commission overrides – called Profit Sharing.
