How long does it take to become an insurance broker in Canada (on average)?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Depends on how quickly you can get a job. There is no average amount of time. It could take you five minutes or three years. Unfortunately, it will depend on your ability to get an interview with a brokerage and convince them to hire you. The license will be a secondary issue but generally the brokerage will help you get that part done.

Good luck to you!

How do you discuss a life insurance policy with your grandparent?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

My grandmother is almost sixty years and she does not have a life insurance policy. We were talking and I asked her what she had in place in case of a situation. She said nothing. Her plan is for us to sell her house and split the money.

She has no need of life insurance. She has no dependents. Stop thinking about her death as some kind of windfall profits day for you. She owes you absolutely nothing.

Why is car insurance such a burden on drivers?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Car insurance is the only insurance that people are afraid to use. Its ridiculous. I mean if you are sick you use your medical insurance. If your house gets flooded you use your flood insurance. If your tv breaks down you use your tv insurance.

But when you rear end another car you try your best to give them money to repair the car instead of using the insurance that you pay your hard earned money for? I’m sorry but doesn’t this sound stupid?

Isnt the point of paying for insurance is to use it when needed? Im sure all of use try our best to drive safe but when it comes time to use the insurance we try our best not to. if we have a scratch on our car we pay it out of our own wallet. These deductibles and price increases after using insurance is crazy.

Anyways just my rant about car insurance. What do you guys think of it?

You said it in your rant. "These deductibles and price increases after using insurance is crazy" yeah maybe I do have a slight accident or minor fender bender. Which is cheaper, buying a 250$ fender, 100$ for painting, a total of 350$…..OR Paying 250$ deductible, then having them raise my rates so that I pay 400$ more each year, A total of 650$.

It is stupid, they shouldn’t be allowed to do it, but it happens. Honestly the only reason I have insurance is because I’m required to do so by law. If we didn’t HAVE to….I probably wouldn’t unless it was a brand new car that was very expensive.

What legislation made it illegal for insurance companies to trade over state lines?

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

What law made it illegal for insurance companies to do business over state lines? Or, at the least, roughly in what year was it made illegal for insurance companies to do so?

This is done by state laws not by a Federal law. However a federal law (if enacted) will override the the state laws.

How should I go about choosing a term life insurance broker/company?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I’m married with two children and have one more on the way (very early on in the pregnancy). I’m 29yo, but my father passed away of a heart attack when he was 39. I’m having trouble going the easy route… ie, online, and need some advice on how to choose someone.

You should choose a company with a good rating from AMbest (an insurance rating company) they rate a company on their assets and ability to pay a claim. I only deal with A+ or A++ companies, but any A or B rating is good to trust. When you are inquiring about companies you can ask what their rating is.

I always like to stick also with a company who is well known, Mutual of Omaha, Prudential, ING etc., There just seems to be a better comfort level for me when I deal with a company that has a name image over some other companies that I’ve never heard of.

As far as selecting an agent or broker; that’s just a matter of finding one you are comfortable with and trust. If you call an insurance company direct they’ll probably assign or connect you with an agent in your area. You can also ask family members or friends if they can refer one to you. Agents love to get referrals!

All that you have to do now is give either the agent, broker or insurance company a phone call, tell them you are looking for term life insurance… they will know what to do with you.

If I take a seasonal part time job delivering things with my own truck/trailer, do I need commercial insurance?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I’m thinking about taking a second job that I would use my own pick-up and sometimes my little trailer to deliver things for kids parties. It would only be on the weekends usually from May till October. It wouldn’t even be every weekend. Do I need to get commercial auto insurance?

Yes legally you do if you don’t and have an accident not only will you not be reimbursed for damages you may be charged with insurance fraud.

Does Life Insurance really pay? How do I find the right company to buy level term?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

My husband doesn’t want to get life insurance, he thinks it is a waste and a scam. But if something should happen to him, me and the kids would be SOL. How do I get insurance for us? How do I know the insurance co. will actually pay if something does happen? Are there ways to write the policy so to protect us better?

I like the answer provided by "Financial Answer Guy".

(1) You should have some form of protection if anything happens. It is just like you have to buy car insurance. Do you think your life worth less than your car?

(2) You should be aware that there are many forms of insurances and balance between them if possible.

(3) Please check the rating of the insurance company before buying. You don’t want an insurance company that disappears when you need the pay out, right?

How do I find out my cars car insurance points rating system?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Insurance companys give cars a rating number to determine if one type of car pays more insurance then the other. Where can I find out what the number of my car would be?

no company is gonna give that to you…then youll know how they rate you…i work for an insurance company and we are STRICTLY prohibited form revealing your cars rating system…i can tell you this…think about logically…a new 2007 BENZ is going to be more expansive than a 1982 Civic (logic)…an SUV/truck can cause more damage than a reg 4 door sedan/coupe (2 vehicles are traveling at 50 mph, one weighs 5 tons, the other weighs 12 tons, they both hit the same car/object. which one wll cause more damage?…you do the math…) so they are more not less expensive to insure…its MOSTLY based on your driving history (tickets and accidents), annual miles driven (liability exposure, more driving=more chances for an accident) driving experience and the vehicle you drive…hope this helps

A site I’ve recommended in the past would be…
