Domino’s Pizza Delivery Driver- do you need commercial insurance?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

I have an interview today for a job at Domino’s Pizza to be a delivery driver. My only concern about it is right now I have personal insurance. If I were to get in an accident while delivering a pizza for domino’s, would I still be covered? I’d like to hear from actual insurance reps or people who have had experience with this.

Actually, most personal auto insurance would exclude coverage for any auto that is being used for business reasons. Some may offer a business endorsements to provide such coverage. You may ask your agent about it.

As for the business, most companies have a commercial business policy which include a coverage called "Hired & Non-Owned Auto" (HNO). This is speficially for situations like the one you’re in. However, HNO only covers liability. You may want to ask your new employer if they have this coverage and also if it provides physical damage coverage for your vehicle.

Hope this helps,

Can you answer this question about my commercial auto insurance app?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

On the commercial auto application it asks if this is a service, commercial or retail vehicle. I know it’s not retail. But what’s the difference between a commercial vehicle and a service vehicle?

Service is a vehicle that you use to get to and from a job site. The vehicle itself, isn’t used in the business. Typicially it would be like a salesperson’s car.

Commercial is a vehicle that’s actually used to perform the job – like when you’re a courier bringing stuff somewhere, or if you have a truck that delivers stuff, or hauls materials (like gravel, or concrete) to a job site, or you’re hauling people (limo, taxi, bus, ambulance).

Retail, is when you’re delivering to a residence – a non-business. Like flowers, or furniture delivery.

Concerning commercial insurance for general liability, what does primary and non-contributory actually mean?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Agents are asking for this and I am looking for some useful info to help explain to them what it is and why there is additional premium associated.

Ah, the old "additional insured on a primary and non-contributory basis" clause.

It’s most easily illustrated with an example: Joe Construction subs out some work to Jack’s Plumbing, requesting this wording. It means, if Joe Construction is sued, Jack’s Plumbing’s GL policy covers. They pay first (primary), and Joe Construction’s policy doesn’t have to kick in (non-contributory).

The ONLY way I ever get an underwriter to agree to that wording, is by adding more wording : "additional insured on a primary and non-contributory basis, but limited to the operations of the insured."

Otherwise, if the general or another sub causes the accident, Jack’s Plumbing’s GL policy has to pay. First, and without recourse to the general.

How much does general commercial/ business insurance cost for a start up Ltd Company?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

The Ltd Company is based in the UK, has traded for about 6 months, has 2 Directors who work there full time and 2 interns who operate from the office premises.
What is the approximate cost for business insurance for such a Company?

You will need to contact an Insurance Broker. Each business had different needs. My business was catering, so our Insurance would be different than an office based one.
